Abstract

This descriptive study investigates nursing professionalism, internal marketing, and turnover intention among hospital nurses. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among turnover intention, internal marketing (an internal factor of turnover intention), and nursing professionalism (an external factor of turnover intention). Subjects included nurses from a hospital located in Seoul and Chungbuk, and voluntary participation and confidentiality were explained to each subject who agreed to participate. Data were collected from a total of 270 undergraduate students using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 18.0. Results indicated that the average score for hospital nurses’ nursing professionalism was 3.30 (out of 5), 2.58 for internal marketing, and 3.91 for turnover intention, respectively. Nursing professionalism differed significantly depending on age (F = 4.10, p = .007) and career length (F = 2.97, p = .032). Internal marketing also significantly differed depending on age (F = 3.58, p = .014), career length (F = 7.29, p < .001), and shift type (F = 3.43, p = .034). Additionally, there were significant differences in turnover intention depending on marital status (t = 2.21, p = .028), shift type (F = 6.39, p = .002), and position (F = 5.49, p = .005). Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between nursing professionalism and internal marketing (r = .36, p < .001), and a negative correlation between internal marketing and turnover intention (r = -.28, p < .001). Nurses’ turnover intention is associated with internal marketing and nursing professionalism; hence, it is important to implement internal marketing tactics centered on preventing emotional fatigue and to employ strategies that encourage nursing professionalism.

Abstract

This study attempted to examine the level of depression and anxiety among undergraduate students, providing basic data for the development of mental health programs for college students. Informed consent was obtained from all participants, comprising 431 undergraduate students from C university in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Participation in this study was voluntary. Structured questionnaires were administered to participants regarding sociodemographic characteristics and level of depression and anxiety. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. The results showed that undergraduate students’ average depression and anxiety scores were 1.36 and 1.26 out of 4, respectively. There were significant differences in anxiety scores according to gender (t = –2.676, p = .008) and type of residence (F = 2.573, p = .037), Female students obtained higher anxiety scores than male students did. Regarding living status, participants living alone and those in home stays had higher anxiety scores than those living with family, in dormitories, and with others. Moreover, a strong positive correlation was observed between depression and anxiety (r = .517, p < .001), with higher depression leading to greater anxiety. Therefore, identifying and efficiently managing factors that cause depression and anxiety in college students is necessary to improve their mental health.

Abstract

Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of exchanging surgical gloves, forceps and the normal saline during surgeries in lowering the level of the contamination. Methods/Statistical Analysis: 92 colon cancer surgeries were randomly allotted into one of four groups. Three different methods were tried: changing gloves in the experimental Group 1, changing forceps in the Experimental Group 2, changing normal saline used for operation in the Experimental Group 3 and no changing any materials with the standard operation method in the control group. After each operation finished, samples were taken and cultured for obtaining the contamination rate. Findings: Study results were as follow: the level of contamination in the experimental group 1 with exchanging gloves after extraction of the lesions of colon was significantly lower than that of the Control Group-Gloves. The method of exchanging the normal saline also demonstrated the effectiveness in lowering the level of contamination of the normal saline. The effectiveness of exchanging forceps was proved as the level of contamination in the experimental group 3 used the method of exchanging the forceps was significantly lower than the control group. Applications: These findings can be utilized as the evidenced foundation to establish the theoretical guidelines or the standards of practice for the surgical instruments to control the surgical site infection effectively.

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the awareness towards death among Korean using Q-methodology, to offer a data for care intervention of Korean people. Methods/Statistical Analysis: A convenience sample of 31 participants, who were living in community residence at two Metropolitan Cities, classified 40 Q-samples using nine point scales. The collected data were analyzed using QUANL program. Findings: Three Perspectives emerged on awareness towards death in Korean people: life-attached, traditionalist, and death-rejecter. The three factors accounted 48.4% of total variance: factor 1 (32.7%), factor 2 (8.6%), and factor 3 (7.1%), respectively. Of the total 31 participants, 13 belonged to factor 1, 11 belonged to factor 2 and 7 to factor 3. The results of the study will conduce to understanding that healthcare providers have of the awareness of Korean people toward death. Improvements/Applications: The findings represent that differentiated interventions for death education program is recommended based on the three perspectives of death awareness in Korea.

Abstract

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of sitz bath massage on postoperative pain, anxiety, and mood states in patients with hemorrhoidectomy as a nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Methods/Statistical Analysis: Forty-four patients with hemorrhoidectomy were followed post-operatively: 23 subjects in the experimental group who received sitz bath massage, and 21 in the control group who taken only sitz bath. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to measure pain and anxiety, while the Korean Profile of Mood States-Brief (K-POMS-B) was used utilized to evaluate mood states. The data were analyzed by χ2-test, t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA. Findings: While the experimental group showed no significant difference in pain, there was significant difference in the experimental group in terms of anxiety. The experimental group showed significant difference in mood states compared to the control group. Sitz bath massage could be regarded as an effective nursing intervention for decreasing and relieving post-operative anxiety and mood status. Improvements/Applications: Sitz bath massage has been shown to be an effective intervention for hemorrhoidectomy. These findings could be used in nursing and midwifery practices and future relevant research.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: This study is to utilize the health services of N- citizens as a basic data for establishing the 7th Regional Health Plan (2018 ~ 2022) respectively.

Methods/Statistical Analysis: Tools for measuring the health care needs of the subjects were revised and supplemented by the tools of the Community Health Survey. Data was collected through a questionnaire from August 1 to August 21, 2018. Although 447 questionnaires were collected, 403 questionnaires were used for data analysis, except for 44 which were not clear or missing. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS 18.0 program.

Findings: The result showed that the overall health service level was 2.90 out of 4.0, and the kindness of staff in the sub - area was the highest with 3.32 points, followed by medical service level 2.86, modernization of facilities 2.77, and excellence in equipment 2.69 points. The total health care needs of the subjects were 3.38 out of 4.0, health care services and health promotion services were 3.41 points higher respectively. As a result of analyzing the difference between total health care need, health care service, health promotion service, elderly health service, maternal & child health service by general characteristics, only gender and total health care demand showed statistically significant differences(t=-2.095, p=.037). The result showed that there was positive correlation of the total health care need, health care service(r=.862, p<.01), health promotion service(r=.849, p<.01), elderly health service(r=.868, p<.01), maternal & child health service(r=.856, p<.01) in citizens of N city.

Improvements/Applications: Development of a health promotion program is needed to improve the population’s health potential and the ability to overcome the risk factors of the disease.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: The purpose of this study analyzes health care needs by life cycle and provides basic data for developing health care programs accordingly.

Methods/Statistical Analysis: Tools for measuring the health care needs of the subjects were revised and supplemented by the tools of the Community Health Survey. Data was collected through a questionnaire from August 1 to August 21, 2018. Although 897 questionnaires were collected, 843 questionnaires were used for data analysis, except for 54 which were not clear or missing. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS 18.0 program.

Findings: The analysis of health care needs by life cycle was the highest in adolescents with 3.41 out of 4.0, followed by 3.40 in childhood, 3.39 in elderly, 3.35 in adulthood, and 3.31 in pregnancy. The difference in the health care needs by life cycle according to the general characteristics is as follows: in the difference analysis of health needs by gender and life cycle, there was a statistically significant difference in adolescents (t=-2.770, p=.006) and adulthood (t=-1.970, p=.049). There was also a statistically significant difference in health needs in adolescence (F=2.225, p=.039) and adulthood (F=2.449, p=.024). The difference between marital status and health demand was statistically significant in adolescence (F=4.570, p=.001) and adulthood (F=3.715, p=.005).

Improvements/Applications: Therefore, in order to improve the health potential of the residents, it is necessary to develop a health care program according to the life cycle.
